Catalog vs. editor

Catalogs display a collection of business objects of the same object type. Editors display data stored (or related to) in a single business object. For one object type, various catalogs and editors may be defined.

For example, objects of the Facility object type store information on individual company buildings or building complexes.

  • Different catalogs may be used to list the facility data in different ways: all data on all facilities, all data on all facilities in a given area, a limited selection of data on a limited set of facilities, etc.

  • Different editors may be used to display and work with data in individual facility objects: new facility object creation, full display and editing of a facility object, display only of a limited set of data in a facility object, specific editing of a facility, etc.

Editors/views perform the following functions:

  • Object display

Open an editor (usually from a catalog) to get an overview of data stored in or referenced by a single business object.

  • Data entry and modification

Editors are also used for data entry. This can be additional information about objects already existing in the database or new object creation. Checks can be performed to ensure data consistency and compliance with predefined business rules.

Additionally, special view types are used for:

  • Field search

Field search is a term used in USU Service Management for a user friendly way of searching in catalogs. For this functionality special views can be defined. These views usually contain a limited number of fields most likely to be used to perform regular searches. They then get displayed in the upper part of a catalog window. For more information, please refer to the Searching/Filtering in catalogs chapter.

  • Column search

It is possible to perform the Column search in reference catalogs the same way the search can be applied in the catalog.

  • Expert search

The Expert search uses a table-like interface allowing any attribute to be used for searching. While performing the search is not as straightforward as in Field search, the search options within the Expert search are greatly enhanced.

Refer to the Editors topic for a distinction between the editor and view terms.
